Traveling Like the Light

Marc Jacobs, Spring 2007

Marc Jacobs has always had an eye for the original and unexpected. Spring 2007 was the epitome of this talent, and the layered all-white outfits that dominated the runway still stand out in my memory as enormous successes. Tinfoil hats, plastic flowers, and deceptively complicated shoes (one model famously removed hers mid-walk) finished out the show, and the perfect Japanese-bag-lady-going-to-the-beach look was born.

Louis Vuitton, Fall 2009
I remember how controversial this collection was at the time; you either loved it, or you hated it. That’s sort of the motto for every collection Marc Jacobs designs, and it’s why his shows are so highly anticipated every season. The mix of colors, textures, proportions, and wild accessories combined to make a creative and memorable collection that still speaks to me four years later, and is a reminder that, at least in my opinion, Marc is one of the most talented American designers of this generation.
